3D Printers and Printing

We are living in an era of information technology, where everything needs to be digital and rapid. Gone are the days when the 2D printers were used for demonstrating the product and its prototype. Now the 3D technique is used everywhere. 3D printers are one of the demanding printers nowadays, and also help explain the product design with all three dimensions. It is an extension of the idea of Rapid Prototyping. It is an idea of presenting the prototype with more digital and automated methods to the customer. Before this concept, it was challenging for designers to show the prototype to the customer and make the last minute changes. 2D printing technique was introduced for this purpose, but now it is extended to the 3D printing technique. This technique has become popular with the passage of the time due to its benefits.

3D printing is also known as Additive Manufacturing. It helps the designer to make the model quickly and efficiently. It creates a complete three-dimensional object design for customer satisfaction from CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and significantly saves cost, time, and material. The typical traditional manufacturing created a centralized model of product design. But 3D printing technique can convert this centralized model into a distributed model. This technique is useful for creating aesthetic and functional prototypes. One of the conventional 3D printing techniques is FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling). It is a metal extrusion process.

Best 3D Printers:

A lot of different 3D printers are being used in the market nowadays. They have their specific features. Some are best for beginners and some for professionals. There are some best of them listed below:

  • Original Prusa i3 MK3S
  • Formlabs Form 2
  • Frozen Sonic Mini
  • Ultimaker S5
  • Peopoly Phenom
  • Lulzbot Mini2
  • Creality Ender 3
  • Creality Ender 3 pro
  • Flash forge Finder 3D printer
  • Form labs Form 3
  • Polaroid Play Smart 3D Printer

3D printers Cost:

Different 3D printers have various specific features and qualities. So, the cost of 3D printers varies according to their features and categories. These categories include basic level 3D printers, Professional and performance, Enthusiast, Hobbyist printers, and manufacturing 3D printers. The average cost of 3D printers revolves around $700. Entry-level and hobbyist 3D printers range from $200-$1500. The enthusiast 3D printer ranges from $1500-$3500. The high end professional 3D printers range from $3500-$6000. The industrial level 3D printers are more expensive and can range from $20,000-$100,000. The printer’s price always depends upon its nature.

Applications of 3D Printing:

3D printing is now significantly used in many areas for different purposes. They can be manufacturing areas, industrial areas, medicine field, and sociocultural areas. Some of the applications are listed below:

Manufacturing Applications:

3D printing is now being used in manufacturing areas on a large scale. One of them is cloud-based additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing is made of cloud-computing techniques that allow distributed production. So, 3D printing plays an essential role in it. Other applications in manufacturing areas are Mass Customization, Research, Rapid Prototyping, Food, Rapid Manufacturing, and agile tooling.

Industrial Applications:

Industrial areas are one of the significant areas in which 3D printing has significantly developed its importance. One of them is Apparel. Fashion designers are now using and experimenting with different 3D designs on clothes. 3D printed shirts and t-shirts are in high demand. Other industrial areas using 3D printing techniques include jewelry and industrial art, Automobile Industry, Construction Industry, Firearms, Computer, and Robotic Industry, Soft sensors and actuators, and space.

Medicine Applications:

3D printing techniques have great use in the medical field as well. It is now using in implantation by printing the patient-specific implant. A lot of successful surgeries and operations have been done, including the pelvis implantation in a patient, and others. It is also using x-rays. Replicas of different human organs are being made with 3D technology. Other medicine applications are Bio Printing, Medical Devices, and Pharmaceutical Formulations.

Sociocultural Applications:

There are a lot of sociocultural areas that are using 3D printing techniques. It helps people to create ease for them. This is also a way to save money by designing it yourself instead of buying it. The applications include 3D Selfies, Communication, Domestic Use, Education and Research, Environmental Use, Art and Jewelry, and Cultural Heritage.
